It is a home, yet it looks like a graceful boat ashore. This luxury contemporary abode with eight bedrooms and a design that is at once modern and welcoming was uncovered by the Modern Octopus on Freshome. It covers 340 square meters and is set amid a lavish landscape with a Mediterranean tinge. A generous, semi-circular wooden deck wraps around half the house, and provides ample leisure space. Not that there isn’t plenty of space for leisure inside, as well, with an open space living room, whose glass wall provides plenty of photo-ops. It looks out onto a rocky bay, awash with pitch perfect azure waters, and features a stripped down, unassuming fireplace in white natural stone. There is a sauna, for total relaxation and a panoramic terrace on the penthouse level. The color palette was also chosen with leisure in mind, as it is dominated by whites and punctuated by the warm tones of natural wood. Carpets and plants are scattered about the house, for a personalized look and ever-more leisurely feel.

Circular shapes are reiterated throughout the house: the coffee table in the living room, the spiraling interior metal staircase, the cascading globes light fixture delineating the kitchen from the dining area. The furniture style vacillates between ultra-contemporary, with basic straight lines, and vintage-inspired. The lighting was especially designed to set a certain kind of mood, as recessed lights and spotlights abound downstairs. The bedrooms upstairs, plentiful to accommodate a host of guests or extended family members, seem to have been furbished with practicality and purpose in mind. As for the design piece de resistence, one cannot help but send an admiring nod toward the circular ship-like picture window in the day area – a splendid frame for an equally splendid landscape which extends outside. With this final invitation extended, what can one do but sail away on an ocean of tranquility and good times?

[...] How much sleek, minimal, efficient contemporary architecture can you fit into a 4 by 30 meter lot? Depends on who you ask. Quite a lot, were we to judge according to Dutch or Japanese standards, which often feature tiny, yet very chic homes. The team at Sao Paulo-based FGMF Architects would also concur. They are the creative force behind the 4×30 House, the minute, yet very modern project featured below. Not only is the home cleverly designed, it is also appropriately adapted to the specifics of the location. I comprises two distinct buildings in different sizes, organized around a central garden and connecte via a footbridge. Read more [...]
