When you’ve got a beaten-up two-story villa in the suburbs of Barcelona, it’s a shame to let it grow derelict. So what you do, is hire such talent as architect Joan Arnau Farrás of 05 AM Arquitectura studio. Before you know it, your olden country home will take on a new lease of life and turn into the ideal urban residence, with ample open spaces, lavish views and innovative interiors. As a bonus, all your memories and the home’s original relaxed flair won’t be destroyed, but simply updated and made more efficient for a contemporary, upbeat lifestyle. The designer based the remodel on custom woodwork and unique furniture indoors, while allowing the outdoors spaces to bask at leisure in the fresh air, warm sunlight and beautiful views of the surroundings. Inside, the major surfaces are in neutrals – sleek metallic gray, warm-toned wide-planked oak flooring and walls painted in white and gray. This unassuming backdrop is perfect for setting off the clever remodeling solutions, colorful decorative pieces and many IKEA and repurposed pieces of furniture, which come together to complete the ensemble of a dynamic urban home. There’s ample storage room in the kitchen, concealed behind space-saving harmonica doors, behind which shelves are stacked all the way up to the ceiling. There are décor accents popping up everywhere, with the aim to amaze and enchant – the floor-to-ceiling blackboard strip in the kitchen for the times when inspiration hits and there is no pen in sight; the Pop Art inspired Audrey Hepburn print; the self-standing sink in white porcelain in the master bathroom.

The entire ensemble is sitting pretty among the lush, verdant landscape of suburban Barcelona, lovingly shielded by a hilly slope. The outdoor deck lounge particularly benefits from the uniqueness of its surroundings – just imagine lounging in one of the two white deck chairs, sipping on a Margarita and keeping yourself busy with nothing else but the glorious view of the setting Mediterranean sun. Should you choose to step back inside, you’ll perhaps note that the floor plans have been cleared up by removing several walls. The main living area allows access into the kitchen and study, as well as to the upstairs bedrooms, via a modern-looking staircase.

[...] Modern home design also allows residence users to soak in the view, and the Casa Gotmar 138, with its floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors does to a perfect tee. The Mediterranean weather and forested mountain views can be fully taken in through the home’s generous glazed surfaces. However, they are also shielded from weather disasters by wooden screens, an elegant method of heat insulation. There is ample communication between indoors and outdoors, as many of the rooms open up into open-air terraces. Several terraces create a stepped, Pagoda-like structure, as they descend down the sloped terrain. The interiors are minimally furbished, with contemporary items in sleek lines, warmed up by the soft light of recessed spotlights. However, future elegance is sure to follow, once the clients move in. [...]
